1.1 Background of the Study

As new words appeared and oldones disappeared every day, English is growing and changing every minute. Theexpanding power of English neologism cannot be neglected.The appearance of Neologism is a kind of social and linguistic phenomenon.Neologisms exist all the time and flourish in the rapid development of society. In thepast several years, great efforts have been made to the study of neologism, but most ofthe researches focus on its classification, word formation，semantic features andusages.

1.2 Significance and Necessity of the Study
语言是人类沟通的重要工具。人们用它来沟通和相互配合。在社会生活中的任何微小的变化都会引起语言的变化。由于语言是社会生活中最重要的沟通方式，词汇是语言中最敏感的部分，任何的变化，即使是最小的一个或多或少将反映在词汇。新词语的外观语言学者已经引起了人们极大的兴趣和关注，因为新词新语的研究有很大的社会价值，以及语言值。一方面，新词服务为我们在当前的社会和文化学习的窗口，为它可以反映人的思维模式和心理状态，另一方面，新词新语的分析可以帮助我们获得发展的教唆了解词汇。Language is an important tool for human communication. People use it tocommunicate and cooperate with each other. Any small changes in social life wouldgive rise to changes in language. Since language is the most important way ofcommunication in social life，and vocabulary is the most sensitive part in language,any changes, even the smallest one would be reflected more or less in vocabulary.The appearance of new words and expressions has aroused great interest andattention of the linguistic scholars because the study of neologism has great socialvalue as well as linguistic value. On the one hand, neologism serves as a window forus to learn the current society and culture, for it can reflect people's thinking modeand mental state; on the other hand，the analysis of neologism can help us obtain abetter understanding of the development of vocabulary.
In the past decades, scholars have tried to analyze neologism in terms of itsdescription，classification and application. Based on neologisms dictionaries. GarlandCannon (1987) introduced the formation types of neologisms. In China, researchesabout neologisms mainly focused on lexical system. Wang Rongpei (1997，2000，2003) has published several articles about English neologisms. CNKI database havecollected nearly 300 articles about neologism which involved different aspects ofEnglish neologisms. Although great achievement in the study of neologisms has beenmade, there are still many controversial problems such as the construction process ofnew words and the dynamic interpretation of new words, which have to be dealt with.In this thesis, attention will be focused on the analysis of the cognitive processesof English neologisms' production. Under the guidance of conceptual integrationtheory, we can obtain unique mental images by combing various concepts in ourmind.
