摘要:A number of studies have shown that, with the significant role in contributing to cohesionand coherence of a text,the use of adverbial connectors is problematic for language learners,particularly for foreign language learners .
Conclusion
The study compares the two corpora with each other named LEWC and BAWE by usingthe corpus-based approach. It finds students in GSAU have the overall tendency of overuseadverbial connectors compared with English native students. Such like so, first(fy),second(ly)however f therefore. This is same as the above investigations conducted by other researchersabout the adverbial connectors' use. At the same time, it also finds the adverbial connectorschosen by the students in GSAU coincide exactly with native English students. It seemed thatstudents in GSAU depend too much on certain category of adverbial connectors, though, forexample, the category of additive and result/inference. To some extent, it has relationshipwith the style of the writings chosen. Some researchers think it is related to the works ofcoherence written by Halliday and Hasan. Research on English writings published in the later1970s and early 1980s begin to pay their attention to achieve the coherence of article by usingthe way of adverbial connectors' use. Emphasized by such viewpoint, students take it forgranted that to make the article more coherent is just to put some adverbial connectors intothe sentence. Then, everything is perfect. The result of this ways of writing is to make thearticle extremely unnatural and affected. Fulfilled with adverbial connectors, the articlelooked too coherent to read. Scollon summaries the possible reasons as: too much emphasisfrom teacher,the mis-leading of the textbook and negative influence from various tests, etc.besides the corpus, it may need some other methods to further discuss its exact reason.
