摘要:As a matter of fact, the need to promote the development of students' Englishreading ability has received attention in academic circles over the last few decades. InChina, many scholars have also studied on the development of students' English readingability.
Chapter 1 Introduction
1.1 Background of the study
Due to the important role of English in international exchange, English is learnedand spoken by almost every country in the world and the overwhelming majority of thecountries have taken English as a compulsory course since primary school. Under suchcircumstances, the study of English Language Teaching has become heated in academiccircles and received great attention at home and abroad.Many scholars argue that English reading is the most essential and important skillfor learners to master. It is a means of language acquisition and communication, andplays a vital role in the improvement of English level. Through reading,learners tend toimprove both their language skills and cultural literacy. Particularly, learners can enlargetheir vocabulary quantity,improve comprehension ability, acquire cultural knowledge,and broaden their horizon. Clearly, reading plays an indispensable part in Englishlearning.In China, our progressive reform in educational system has made great progress. Agreat deal of attention has been given to both the theory and practice of EnglishLanguage Teaching. By now English teaching in China has got apparent achievements.However,there are still some unsatisfactory aspects, especially when reading isconcerned.

1.2 Significance of the study
As a matter of fact, the need to promote the development of students' Englishreading ability has received attention in academic circles over the last few decades. InChina, many scholars have also studied on the development of students' English readingability. They have supposed some theories such as reading models and strategies tomake an improvement in this field. These theories provide theoretical support forEnglish reading teaching in China.Even though scholars have studied a lot on the development of students' Englishreading ability, most of the researches focus on the application of a certain theory in thereading teaching. Reading is a complex process and is affected by many kinds of factors.Based on the current situation of non-English major undergraduates' reading ability andrelevant reading theories,the author conducts an experiment which deals with theproblems in aspects of vocabulary,discourse knowledge and reading speed.This thesis adopts the method of teaching experiment to study how to promote thedevelopment of non-English major undergraduates' reading ability. It is of greatsignificance to the development of English reading teaching.

Chapter 2 Literature Review
2.1 Theories of reading
Language scholars have given varied definitions of reading from differentperspectives. In the early stage of reading teaching, some scholars believe readingmeans getting the meaning behind the printed symbols. At that time, reading mainlyinvolves understanding the meaning of certain words and expressions. Later, reading isdescribed as a process of responding, which means reading is the reconstruction andreinterpretation of the written material. With the development of Cognitive Psychology,modem reading theory presents some new views. It argues that reading is cognitiveprocess which focuses on the understanding of the written language and attaches greatimportance to the context.
