摘要:From the theoretical point of view, firstly, as the theoreticalframework of the research is English euphemism and the prototype theory,the thesis may help to enrich the theories of English euphemism, especiallyfrom the formation of English euphemism and the perspective of cognitivemotivations.

ed linguistics, scholars started their euphemistic studyfrom other different perspectives. For a long time, euphemism has been studied mainly from therhetorical approach. Euphemism was confined to a figure of speech andwas regarded as a lexical technique for writers or speakers to make theirexpressions more preferable.Almost all the earliest English dictionaries define euphemism as afigure of speech. In China, many scholars also study euphemism at therhetorical level. Chen Wangdao (2008)[3]studied euphemism from theperspective of rhetoric in his book Xiu Ci Xue Fa Fan (An Introduction toRhetoric). Pan Shaozhang (1998)[4]studied euphemism in his book namedEnglish Rhetoric and Writing.

2.2 Cognitive Approach to English Euphemism
Cognitive linguistics is a relatively new branch of linguisticscompared with other branches. It is considered to be a new linguisticparadigm of theoretical linguistics in recent 20 years. Generally speaking,cognitive linguistics is a cross-boundary subject which involves theknowledge of both linguistics and cognitive science. Some of the importantscholars in this field are: G. Lakoff, R. Langacker, L. Talmy, C. Fillmore,M. Johnson, J. R. Taylor, D. Geeraerts, P. Kay, G. Fauconnier, A. Goldberg.Cognitive linguistics studies language from a different angle which isclosely related with the outside world. It focuses on what people experience, how people perceive and finally how people use theirinstrument—language—to express.Cognitive linguistics is characterized by the following three basicqualities. First, it denies that an autonomous linguistic faculty exists in themind. Cognitive linguists do not follow the idea that the mind has a uniqueand autonomous module for language acquisition. This is in contrast withthe idea of generative grammar which is represented by Chomsky.Although cognitive linguists do not completely deny the innateness of thelinguistic faculty of human brain, they deny that this kind of human abilityis separated from the rest of cognition. Second, it understands grammar interms of conceptualization.

4 Cognitive Motivations of English Euphemism Based on Prototype Theory
