1 Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Wilkins (1972) has a famous remark “While without grammar, very little can beconveyed; without vocabulary, nothing can be conveyed.” He claimed that vocabulary was afundamental part of language learning.It is known that whatever language a person learns, vocabulary is indispensable.Nowadays, teachers realize that learning a second language is learning a huge number ofvocabularies, because it is exposed firstly to students. Mc. Carthy (1990) claimed that “… nomatter how well student learns grammar, and no matter how successfully the sounds of thesecond language are mastered, without words to express a wider range of meanings,communication in a second language can’t happen in any meaning way.” And then, asKrashen (in Lewis, 1993) said that “When students travel, they don’t carry grammar books,they carry dictionaries.” Therefore, vocabulary acquisition is indispensable for secondlanguage learning.For a long time, vocabulary has always been a huge burden for English teachers andstudents. Teachers get into a trouble in how to teach vocabulary and students have difficulty inmemorizing vocabulary well. In China, for most universities, English majors also have theproblem with the memorization of vocabulary. Although they receive the primary courses, it isnecessary for them to remember a large number of words. Therefore, seeking a good methodto remember vocabulary is important, rather than remember vocabulary mechanically andintentionally. During this period, they have to face the TEM4 and TEM8 exams. In Englishclasses, firstly, teachers just teach students new words and ask them to read words bythemselves, and then spend time in explaining the usage of words and text. As a result, itmainly relies on students themselves to remember vocabulary after class. While most studentsfollow their own methods, they memorize vocabulary deliberately and directly.

1.2 The Significance and Purpose of the Study

Most college students are the fans of English movies and series, and they spend agreat deal of time watching television. So in the course of watching English movies, studentsare exposed repeatedly to words in context and then the opportunity for vocabularyacquisition is enhanced. By doing this, students not only understand the content of the film,while enjoying the movies, they also may acquire vocabulary at the same time. It can be saidto kill two birds with one stone. With the development of present Internet technology, moreand more college students accept and like watching English movies with Chinese and Englishsubtitles. Therefore, it is known that vocabulary acquisition runs through the whole learningcourse for English learners. However, it is impractical for students to remember vocabularydeliberately all the time or to remember vocabulary which mainly rely on teachers’explanation in class. So it is very necessary and important for second language learners toacquire vocabulary incidentally when they finish other tasks.However, scholars both at home and abroad, especially the domestic ones, mainly carryout researches on second language incidental vocabulary acquisition under readingenvironment.
