摘要:In order to improve the English level of Tibetan students and the Englisheducation in Tibet, firstly, the thesis collects the Tibetan students’ English background,and their views toward grammatical complexity during English syntactic acquisition.

From Rod Ellis’s point of view (2002),language transfer is a process that learner applies the grasped knowledge ofthe mother language to the foreign language learning. (p.305)In a word, language transfer is the influences of L1 itself and other relevantelements like culture, thinking mode, etc. on L2 during L2 acquisition process.

2.2 Categories of language transfer


2.2.1 Categories based on different levels
According to different transfer levels, Odlin(2001) divides it into severalcategories as the following:Phonetic and phonological transferIt is obvious that phonetics and phonology of L1 influence the second languageacquisition greatly.Odlin (2001) pointed out the comparison of sounds between the mother languageand target language should include both phonology and phonetics.Individual is different in the perceptual acuity, and the individual with higherphonetic sensibility is more likely to overcome the negative phonological transferfrom L1.Syntactic transferAccording to Odlin, syntactic transfer refers to the structure transfer of sentences,including word order, negation and so on. It can be divided into positive transfer andnegative transfer. The study of word order is helpful for realizing language transfer, and understanding the factors that affect second language acquisition like syntactictypology, discourse, etc. The study of negation shows evidence of both transfer andother influences on SLA.Semantic transferSemantic transfer includes lexical semantic transfer and propositional semanticstransfer. Odlin (2001) discussed meaning transfer from the lexical and syntacticperspectives. Both of lexical and syntactic transfers concern syntactic features and aresimilar in linguistic forms, however syntactic transfer deals with propositionalsemantics, and semantic transfer tests transfer of syntactic features.
