Chapter One Introduction

1.1 Background of the Present Study
With the popularity of English movies, English movie reviews get more and morehighlighted. Together with English movies, they can enhance people’s self-cultivation andspiritual realm in the form of art and beauty. Meanwhile, with the prevalence of computersand accelerating globalization of world economy, English movies and movie reviews havebecome a fashionable media that enable cross-cultural researchers and English learners todeeply understand the customs and values in western countries which might drive them toreach a profound comprehension of English.Movie reviews, also known as film critiques, refer to the analysis and evaluation of afilm’s director, actor, cinematography, shooting technique, plot, clues, setting, tone, lighting,etc. It aims to identify and comment on the aesthetic values, cognition values and socialsignificance implicated in movies. English Movie reviews, which aim to “provide theconsumer with basic, descriptive information about a movie (such as the genre, the cast, andthe plot) and a personal evaluation, an either positive or negative judgment of the quality ofthe film in question” (Gemser, et al. 2006:45), can better audiences’ understanding andAPPRECIATION of movies. In this sense, movie reviews are supposed to be evaluative innature, i.e. movie reviews are rich in evaluative resources. Therefore, English movie reviewcan be considered one of the most influential types of written texts in contemporary societyand it reflects abundant interpersonal relations, which are worth our investigating.

1.2 Purpose and Significance of the Study
To fill the gap and have an intensive investigation of APPRECIATION in English moviereviews, the author conducts a systematic analysis of the APPRECIATION system in Englishmovie reviews, attempting to explore the overall distribution pattern and textual distributionpattern of it in the four stages, namely, Introduction, Plot-description, Evaluation andConclusion, of English movie reviews. This can explain how the professional movie criticseffectively express their overviews to some newly released movies via strategic managementof complex APPRECIATION resources in English movie reviews. Through elaborate andcomprehensive descriptions, the present study is supposed to sharpen our understanding ofAPPRECIATION resources and their features in movie reviews, and provide practical andpedagogical implications for both movie reviews reading and writing. Meanwhile, it willfacilitate understanding and mastery of foreign cultures and the western value systems, whichcan enhance aesthetic abilities of cross-cultural researchers and English Language learners inturn.To achieve this goal, this study constitutes two perspectives: overall distribution patternsand textual distribution patterns of APPRECIATION system in English movie reviews.
