摘要:The specific study of Tibetan students’ English vowel acquisition is significantin pronunciation for minority students and in English teaching for teachers of English.Through the acoustic experiment and contrastive analysis, the present reseachattempts to explore whether language transfer exists in Tibetan students’ Englishlearning especially in vowel acquisition.
Chapter 4 Results and Discussion
4.1 Results
These eight participants (4 males and 4 females) of this study are Tibetanstudents of Southwest Universities for Nationalities. Each student is presented a testpaper and clearly pronounces each word twice. The Tibetan recording sample of eachspeaker contains 28 items in which the seven basic vowels are involved. With thePraat software, the speakers’ pronunciation samples are analyzed and the F1 and F2 ofeach Tibetan vowel are extracted from speakers’ sample words. Then each speaker’svowel patterns are drawn by Excel with the formant frequency data collected fromPraat.Tibetan students’ Tibetan vowel patterns will be presented in Fig. 4.1-Fig.4.10.MT represents Male Tibetan participant and FT represents Female Tibetan participant. In Fig.4.1, Fig.4.2, Fig.4.3, Fig.4.4, Fig.4.6, Fig.4.7, Fig.4.8 and Fig.4.9, to beobserved clearly, only the three point vowels are presented. And the overall Tibetanbasic vowel patterns for males and females will be presented in Fig.4.5 and Fig.4.10.

Conclusion
The thesis attempts to study Tibetan students’ English learning through anacoustic analysis of their English vowel acquisition. With the contrastive analysis ofTibetan and English phonological systems, it is possible for us to examine thelanguage transfer effect on Tibetan learners’ English vowel acquisition and theinterlanguage properties of Tibetan learners’ English vowel pronunciation in theprocess of English learning. The previous English phonological acquisition studies on Tibetan students’ onlymade simple contrastive analysis between Tibetan and English phonological systemand made a prediction on pronunciation difficulties that Tibetan students would havein their English learning. There are few researches that focused on on Tibetanstudents’ English vowel pronunciation through experimental study. This thesis achieves the purpose through the experimental study: (1) describingthe language transfer from Tibetan vowel pronunciation on Tibetan learners’ Englishvowel acquisition; (2) summarizing the features of interlanguage of Tibetan students’English vowel pronunciation; (3) providing some practical suggestions of Englishpronunciation teaching to the teachers in Tibetan areas. This study also attempts toanswer the following three questions: (1) what are the differences between Tibetanand English basic vowel patterns? (2) is there language transfer effect from Tibetanlearners’ mother tongue on their English vowel acquisition? (3) what are the featuresof Tibetan learners’ English intervowels?
