5.1 Types of Proverb Variations
After a thorough investigation, English proverb variations can be classified intofive types, that is, substitution/ replacement, deletion, addition, antonym and reversion.On the one hand, these five types are considered as the transformational ways of theoriginal proverbs; on the other hand, they can be regarded as the characteristics ofproverb variations. In this paper, the structure and the meaning of proverbs arementioned repeatedly. The structure refers to the sentence structure of the proverb. Manyproverbs consist of a simple sentence. A simple sentence is a sentence structure whichcontains one independent clause or one main clause that makes sense by itself. It is madeup of a subject and a predicate (Katz & Postal, 1964).The five main types of variations will be explained at some length.

Conclusion

Based on corpus approach and empirical method, this study made a research onEnglish proverbs and proverb variations. By using the experience of previous References,the study analyzed and discussed the data. The major findings are listed as follows:Firstly, According to the findings based on COCA, 90 per cent of the originalproverbs have variant forms. Among 101 American English proverbs, there are 90having variant forms. This means over time English proverbs have changed and somenew forms have appeared. The phenomenon of proverb variations is becoming socommon and popular that people have accepted. Proverb variations have become anindispensable part of language. They coexist with the original proverbs. In somecontexts, the original proverbs can be replaced with the varied forms. What’s more,sometimes varied forms are getting more popular. This evidence can prove that not allthe proverbs are used as a fixed form. Language has the property of flexibility andregularity. But learners cannot change proverbs into any forms in real life. They shouldobey some rules and be prepared to recognize them in reading, writing or conversation.
