t of researches on this linguistic phenomenon. So far, the studies ofhedges have been combined with many disciplines like logic, semantics, pragmatics, language teaching, discourse analysis, second language learning and so on. In thischapter, the author will summarize the previous studies of hedges abroad, includingthe definition and classification of hedges. In 1965, the American cyberneticist L.A.Zadeh firstly put forward the concept offuzziness and fuzzy set theory in his article “Fuzzy Set”. Zadeh said, “more often thannot, the classes of objects encountered in the real physical world do not have preciselycriteria of membership”. From his point of view, the universal of language is a fuzzyset that doesn’t have a fixed boundary in fact, and the transition from membership tonon-membership is gradual. On the basis of Zadeh’s theory, the famous American linguist Lakoff firstlyproposed the term “hedges” in 1972, and he defined hedges as words that make thingsfuzzy or less fuzzy. In Lakoff’s opinion, hedges can not only weaken but alsostrengthen the speaker’s commitment to a proposition.

2.2 Studies on Hedges at Home
Compared to the researches abroad, the study of fuzzy linguistics at home onlyhas a short history of about 30 years. In late 1970s and early 1980s, Chinese scholarsstarted to do researches on hedges from different aspects.Professor Wu Tieping was the first one who introduced fuzzy theory and relativeresearch achievements to linguistic field of China. In 1979, the publishment of hisarticle “A Tentative Study on Fuzzy Language” marked the beginning of the study inChina. After Wu Tieping, a lot of scholars have studied hedges from differentperspectives. The famous linguist Zhang Qiao (1998) did a systemic study of fuzzywords from the aspect of semantics. She defined hedges as words that can bring in afuzzy reading and modifies fuzziness to some extent.Chen Yide (2000) analyzed the pragmatic function of hedges in verbalcommunication. Yang Huiling (2001) discussed the pragmatic function of hedges inscientific writing. Chen Zhi’an (1997), Yang Yujun (2002) analyzed thecommunicative function of hedges under the framework of cooperative principle andpoliteness principle. Gao Xiaofang (2002) discussed the pragmatic meanings and features of hedges from the perspective of the violation of cooperative principle.According to Gao, hedges can reflect the speaker’s attitudes and opinions of the topic, meanwhile, it is a
strategy and method of communication.
