aracters are attracted. Singer is the central figure in the novel, while other symbols like Brannon, Mick, Dr. Copeland and Blunt radiate out from him. All these voices have similar living surroundings and characteristics, which give the complicated and sorrowful impression on readers. While Oliver Evans and Frank Durham all believe that Antonapoulos is the central character because when he dies, Singer commits suicide too. Singer believes that Antonapoulos is the most important one among other figures. This paper holds the view that Singer is the center of the novel, while the other four characters surround him and regard him as a God. For McCullers’ first book, her reference to a fugue pattern reflects her early experiment in music and provides a clear understanding of her novels.

Chapter Three Functions of the Musical Affinities in Carson McC ullers’ Fiction

3.1 Music as the regulator of narrative rhythm

Concerned with McCullers’ narratives, one thing cannot be ignored, more or less autobiographical. Unlike Flannery O’Connor or Eudora Welty, she cannot break free of the autobiographical clues in her fiction. She learned music especially piano at an early age, thus the musical rhythm is embedded in her mind. Now, we will discuss more about what musical effects are on her fictional narration.

The pace is considered the most prominent element in the music work. In the art creation, changing pace contributes to the new emotional and experiential structure, then forms a new style. McCullers is adept in controlling the tempo of narrative, which emerges obviously in her fictional writing. Her language is simple, with short sentences and similar theme, without dazzling technical methods that confuse readers or critics. However, she uses many detailed monologues of her figures concerning with mutual love, while most characters are only talking about themselves. The prominent feature of her novel is the multiple dialogues between different characters, while they keep talking about their own experience, not communicating with others. Conversations between them compose the music of reciprocal love involving social, emotional and cultural elements. This is where the spiritual isolation comes from.

Conclusion

Through analyzing the above chapters, this essay tries to prove that Carson McCullers’ fiction imitates the music. Werner Wolf’s typological methods of analyzing the musicalized fiction contribute to interpret the musical affinities in McCullers’ fiction.

The musical affinities in the musicalized fiction by Carson McCullers are shown in two aspects, the explicit thematization of music and the implicit analogies to music. The explicit “telling” of music c论文英语论文网提供整理,提供论文代写英语论文代写代写论文代写英语论文代写留学生论文代写英文论文留学生论文代写相关核心关键词搜索。
