His mind drifting into flight, couldn’t thinking of anything clever to say to her. “It never occurred to me,” as he remembered the incident and its aftermath slightly differently in A Hoosier Holiday, “to tease her, or to tell her how pretty she looked, or frankly to confess that I knew nothing of Latin but that I liked her...That was years beyond me.”(HH 492-93)
