First class (70%+)  Very good, well-presented answer showing clear evidence of supplementary reading and some original thought and ideas.

Upper second (60-69%) Good comprehensive answer. Clear, logical, thorough with evidence of breadth and depth in reading. Understanding of inter-relationships between parts of the module and of the subject.

Lower second (50-59%) Adequate to good answer, Material limited to basic reading and lectures, Competent understanding of individual topics with only limited grasp of  links between topics.

Third (40-49%)  Incomplete answer. Material is sparse with inaccuracies and little evidence of even basic reading. Reliance on lecture material with only limited indication of understanding.

Fail (<40%)   Deficient answer. Inaccuracies, omissions, errors in approach, no evidence of understanding or work.

Recommended Reading

A substantial list of readings comprising recommendations for text books, journal articles, chapters from books and other material is provided below.  This reading forms the core of the module and the recommended reading should be completed in close relation to the lectures and workshops and certainly before the module examination. 

The module will make use of the following textbook:

A.A. Atkinson, R.S. Kaplan, and S.M. Young, Management Accounting, Fourth Edition (International Edition), Pearson Prentice Hall, 2004. (Hereafter AKY)

This text should be purchased by all students.  There is a website supporting this text – see below for details.  Each chapter of AKY contains assignment material and exercises. Suggestions are given for self-study exercises from this material.  Answers will be provided by the module lecture with an appropriate delay to allow the assignments/exercises to be attempted.

In addition we shall draw on readings from a companion book of readings:

S. Mark Young (ed) Readings in Management Accounting, Fourth edition, Pearson Prentice Hall, 2003. (Hereafter SMY)

This reader is fully integrated with AKY and contains over forty recent business press and academic articles, all representing state-of-the-art thinking and examples on a wide variety of management accounting topics.  You may wish to consider buying this book jointly with other students and sharing access.  Readings from this book are listed below and labeled by chapter number and reading (e.g. 1.1, 2.1 etc)

In addition to the above, other readings are recommended below.  Some are available in the Library Short Loan Collection, others are in the journal Management Accounting Research which is available in the library electronic journals collection and can be accessed on-line. The latter will be linked via the ACFI 303 site on VITAL (see below).

The reading for this module is extensive. Try not to be overwhelmed. It would be ideal if you could read everything but this is not possible with all your other commitments. However, you should try to read as much as you can and particularly follow up the topics, which you find most interesting.
