Theoretical basis
Generally speaking, there are three major forms of FDI, setting up a new firm or facility, called as Greenfield FDI, acquiring of or merging with an existing firm, called as M&A FDI, expanding the existing firm or facility, https://www.51lunwen.org/Finance/ also called as Greenfield FDI. The first two forms of FDI are concerned with foreign entry or the start of a business in a foreign country, while the first and third forms of FDI together constitute Greenfield investment. From this view, we know that FDI types and strategies always consider the choice of FDI forms. Choice of foreign entry modes and sub-modes include FDI and exporting or licensing, Greenfield investment or cross border mergers and acquisitions. The choice of locations could be developed countries or developing countries, one developing country or another developing country. Factors that influence the choice of foreign entry modes mainly include foreign exchange regime and arrangements of the host country, foreign exchange exposure arising from doing business in the host country, risks, and so on. While factors influencing FDI location choice mainly include national taxes, cost, roads, access to raw materials, availability and quality of university and technical training, local taxes, access to suppliers, labor relations and so on. When a MNC wants to do FDI, then it may aim to realize some objectives, such as to reduce operating costs, consolidate operations, improve labor force access, develop new product lines, reduce risks, improve productivity, and develop new technologies and source raw materials. Then in the following, two cases of Haier and TCL will be discussed on their FDI mode and entry mode, objectives and so on.
