摘要:The purpose of this thesis is to test and verify the effectiveness of applyingFigure-Ground Theory to senior high English emphatic structure teaching. In order to fulfillthe purpose, this study attempts to answer two research questions by a series of researchprocedures.

English emphatic structure aswell a new theory and learning skill that can be fully understood and absorbed.This thesis is divided into six chapters. Chapter One is the introduction of researchsignificance, research purpose of the study and the structure of the thesis. Chapter Two is theliterature review focusing on the definition of English emphatic structure, namely, Englishit-cleft sentence and English inversions, and the studies at home and abroad. Besides, theapplication of Figure-Ground Theory to language teaching is also reviewed in this chapter.Chapter Three is the theoretical foundation of the thesis. In this part, the definition ofFigure-Ground Theory, Figure-Ground separation and linguistic application of Figure-GroundTheory are discussed. Chapter Four is the research methodology, including research topic,subjects, instruments and tests and teaching procedure. Chapter Five presents the results anddiscussions of the experiment. Chapter Six is the conclusion of the thesis, which includesmajor findings, limitations, and some suggestions for future English grammar teaching.

2 Literature Review


2.1 Definition of It-Cleft Sentence
English it-cleft sentence is one of the most important sentence patterns in Englishgrammar. Many researchers and scholars at home and abroad have defined it-cleft sentence indetail. The first to define it-cleft sentence is Otto Jesperson (1945/1961:147-8). In his VolumeVII of Modern English Grammar, he coined the term it-cleft sentence as follows: a cleavingof a sentence by means of it was (often followed by a relative pronoun or connective) servedto single our one particular element of the sentence and very often, by directing attention to itand bringing it. As it were, into focus, to mark a contrast. Quirk et al (1972) defined it-cleftsentence as a special construction giving both thematic and focal prominence to a particularelement of the clause, so called because it divided a single clause into two separate sections,each with its own verb. Leech et al. (1982: 126) defined it-cleft sentence in the book EnglishGrammar for Today. He claimed the cleft sentence derived its name from the fact that a singleclause was cleft into two separate clause-like parts. But it was generally analyzed as a singleclause with two predicators, rather than as two separate clauses. Besides, Bibber et al (2000)pointed out that it-cleft sentence was a special sentence structure. It divided one completesentence into two small parts. The information was conveyed by the two small parts. Everysmall part had its independent verb… thus it made the particular element of the structure befocalized.

2.2 Previous Studies on English It-Cleft Sentence
The first one to define it-cleft sentence was Jesperson (1945), he addressed that in it-cleftsentence the structure “it…be…that” was the extraposition part, and its function was to makea certain element of the sentence more prominent. Jucker (1996: 699) once stated in the book review of Collins’ Cleft and the pseudo-cleftConstruction in English that “cleft structure will be the touchstone to test framework of alllanguages”.
