摘要:本文是一篇高中英语教学论文,本研究试图将KWL阅读模式应用于高中英语阅读课堂,从而探讨其对学生英语阅读能力和阅读兴趣的影响。

本文是一篇高中英语教学论文,笔者选取太原师范学院附属中学高一年级两个班的84名学生作为研究对象,进行了为期12周的教学实验。他们分别来自F2201和F2202两个班,其中F2201为实验班采用KWL阅读模式,F2202为控制班采用传统英语阅读教学模式。

Chapter One Introduction

1.1 Background of the research

English reading is an important part for students to learn English, because it is a comprehensive ability, which covers basic language knowledge, cultural knowledge, thinking ability and other aspects. Among four basic English skills, reading is not only the important criteria to measure students’ language ability, but also a bridge connecting listening, speaking and writing skills. Furthermore, English reading is also an important means of language input. Reading is not only an important channel for people to obtain information and knowledge but also one of the main ways for people to learn languages (Cheng & Chen, 2019). It is in line with Krashen’s input hypothesis which holds that “language input is the only mechanism that results in the increase of linguistic competence” (Krashen, 1985). 

In addition, recent reforms of the National Matriculation English Test (NMET) have placed much higher expectations on students’ reading comprehension ability. Meanwhile, The New Curriculum Standards also points out that English teaching should advocate students’ deep learning and promote autonomous thinking in a reasonable way. General high school emphasizes guiding students to learn to monitor and adjust their English learning goals, learning methods and learning progress (Ministry of Education, 2017). This requires students need to monitor, reflect and modify their learning strategies and steps in the learning process, so as to achieve the improvement of high-level thinking abilities and reading abilities. In terms of teaching methods, The New Curriculum Standards points out that flexible and diverse teaching methods should be adopted to comprehensively improve students’ language application ability. Meanwhile, it is indispensable to improve students’ reading interest and active students’ background knowledge so as to improve students’ reading ability. Under the guidance of The New Curriculum Standards, English teachers need to explore constantly, try to use various kinds of English reading models to improve students’ English reading ability by promoting their independent thinking and stimulating their reading interest. 

1.2 Purpose of the research

English reading teaching plays an important role to English learning, especially the improvement of students’ language level and thinking quality. In English class, reading teaching should not only focus on the basic language contents but also cultivate students’ deep learning abilities and improve their reading interest. Therefore, it requires teachers to explore new teaching models to help students on English reading learning. This study is expected to help teachers find out a practical and applicable reading model which can stimulate students’ reading interest and improve their reading ability.

Through a research on 84 senior high school students in senior one in Affiliated Middle School of Taiyuan Normal University, this study aims to test the effects of the KWL reading model on students’ reading ability in senior high school.
