Chapter Two Literature Review
This chapter includes six parts. The first part reviews the English writing from thedefinition, pedagogy, and present situation. The second part introduces the basicdefinition, characteristics, structure of paragraph writing and paragraph awareness.The third part reviews the cohesion theory from the definition and the five cohesivedevices. The fourth part gives an overview of studies on cohesion theory abroad andat home. The fifth part is for the relevant studies on the application of cohesion theoryto English paragraph writing. At last, the author summarizes studies that predecessorsalready achieved in brief.
2.1 English Writing
Writing involves learners’ language skills, thinking ability, logical ability andmany other factors and it is the highest level of language learning. Learner’s writingability can reflects the language level of the learner, but it is also the hardest part oflanguage learning. The elementary conception of writing is helpful to grasp thefundamental pedagogy of English writing teaching and learning.The New Oxford Dictionary of English defines writing as: “the activity or skillof making coherent words on paper and composing text...” (Pearsall,2011: 2133).From the linguistic view, writing is a production of word formation. It is theaccumulation of words into a sentence, the accumulation of sentences into aparagraph. From the view of the article, writing is just to write an article. From theview of information processing psychology, writing is the process of informationintake, storage, processing, conversion, and output. “It is the information processingand problem solving. From the perspective of grammatology, writing is the authoruses written symbols to transmit information and mental activities. From a literarypoint of view, writing is a creative spiritual activity” (Li X, 2012:1).

2.2 Paragraph writing
The text in the English article is composed of a set of interrelated and orderlyconnection paragraphs. Paragraphs are the basic building blocks of a text and consistof sentences that express the array semantics of things. In English writing, the writingof paragraphs is closely linked to the success or failure of writing. There is no doubtthat only the understanding of the meaning of the paragraph is not enough. So theauthor in this part analyzes and collates the definition of the paragraph writing,summarizes the characteristics of paragraph, paragraph structure, and paragraphawareness. Through the review to clarify the importance of paragraph writing ,elucidate the important role of cohesion in English writing.Paragraphs are comprised of a set of closely related sentences that describe thesame subject. They can be long or short, from one sentence to ten or even moresentences. It is not important how many sentences a paragraph contains but it isimportant to explain its central meaning clear.
