ed. Finally, the purpose and aims of the thesis are considered, following by the arrangement of each chapter.
Part two, viz. chapter two, mainly introduces the theoretical backgrounds of the thesis, including binary branches: philosophical basis and basic notions of syntax-semantics interface. The former highlights the evolution of exploring the nature of language. The later focuses on the basic notions of syntax-semantics interface: syntactic domain, event structure, argument, semantic orientation, and logic operator.
Part three is aiming to solve the probems of that what are the basic properties of daodi when it occur in A-not-A questions, A-or-B questions, wh-questions, embedded questions, VP-neg questions.
Firstly, under the framework of minimalist program, by examing the syntactic domain in each structure, the thesis attempts to induce the possible syntactic position of daodi.
Secondly, the semantic orientation of daodi is discussed. According to the relavant theories of event semantics, by analyzing the event structure, the thesis discusses the argument of daodi, and the semantic function in that situation.
Lastly, in terms of the basic method of logic semantics, the thesis examines the possible reading of daodi when it is regarded as a logic operator. The result shows that it is an event operator.
Part four is chapter seven. The differences between daodi and nandao are distinguished from the perspectives of syntax, semantics and pragmatics. Thus, it offers evidences indirectly to support the syntactic and semantic properties of daodi.
Part five, viz. chapter eight, is the summary of the thesis. The contents are as following. There are two syntactic positions of daodi: preverbal and clause-initial. The syntactic domain is T’and TP, respectively. The semantic orientation of the former is the subject, whereas that of the latter is an event. The arguments of the former are agent and verb phrase, and that of the latter is the event. The functions of daodi are agent-modifier and event-modifier, respectively. When daodi is regarded as a logic operator, it is an event operator.
The thesis takes an introspection and qualitative method. It testifies that the minimalist program has explanatory force on Chinese modal adverb. To some extent, the thsis makes its contribution to the theories of syntax-semantics interface.
