摘要:As we have described in the introduction, the thesis aims at applying Halliday‘s thematic theory to aquantitative and qualitative study of similarities and differences between English and Chinese abstracts inthe adoption of theme and thematic progression patterns.

From the contrastive study on the sample texts,based on the same genre analysis, the major findings are summarized as following:1) Simple themes have distributed more wildly than multiple themes, multiple themes are presented inthe form of ―textual theme +topical theme‖, and the occurrence of Interpersonal themes is rare.2) Textual themes in English and Chinese abstracts are preffered to use, and conjunctive adjunctsdominate in both English and Chinese abstracts.3) As for the markedness, unmarked themes are more frequently used than marked theme. Object ofresearch and epistemic nouns used as subject heads of unmarked themes are frequently adopted by bothEnglish and Chinese abstracts. Nominalization is often thematized in unmarked theme. However, inEnglish abstracts, empty themes are only found, and elliptical themes exist in Chinese abstracts. Formarked themes in English abstracts, the sequence of them is Manner>Place>Reason; in Chinese abstracts,it is Place>Reason>Manner.4) With regard to TP patterns, in English abstract, its sequence is Parallel>Linear>Constant>Derivative; In Chinese, its sequence is Linear>Parallel>Derivative>Constant. Parallel progressionpattern and linear progression pattern are preferred by both English and Chinese abstracts. The occurrencesof Non-specific progression patterns in Chinese abstracts are more than those in English abstracts.The findings concluded from the present study further prove that thematic progression pattern is anexcellent way to guide the coherence of the text; which has well been related to the genre (Fries, 1983) andthe most informative abstract is a four-part arrangement consisting of Problem-Method-Results-Conclusion(Day, 1998).


  
  6.2 Implications
  Theoretical ImplicationsTheoretically, it is a compensation for the inadequacies of the traditional genre analysis of abstracts toadopt TP patterns and enrich the contrastive study between English and Chinese. Under the guidance of theTheme-Rheme theory, which is a new way of stylistic analysis, can help us further insight into theunderlying structure of abstracts. Therefore, the combination of Theme-Rheme theory with the way ofcomparative study between English and Chinese texts can explore the author‘s train of thoughts underlyingthe textual framework. On the other hand, due to the TP patterns including semantic relationships likeequivalence, reiteration, ellipsis and extension, etc. , which can facilitate to the study of the semanticinter-sentential relationships and the ways of expanding the topics in a text (Qi Yucun, 1993). In this thesiswe make a contrastive study of English and Chinese thematic structures in the same genre-related abstractsto find out the predominant TP patterns in two different languages. Based on this point, it is useful for us tocultivate our learners‘cultural awareness in language study and enable us learn language more efficiently.Practical ImplicationsIn practice, two parts can illustrate the implications of the present study.Firstly, as we mentioned in the literature review, lots of scholars at home and abroad have donevarious theoretical explorations on the close relationship between Theme-Rheme theory and discourseanalysis, however, few of them have conducted an empirical resear论文英语论文网提供整理,提供论文代写英语论文代写代写论文代写英语论文代写留学生论文代写英文论文留学生论文代写相关核心关键词搜索。
