本文采用体裁分析的方法对中国和美国高校的网站英文介绍进行对比分析。以语料库为研究工具,收集语料并建立包括 197 篇英文介绍的 6 个语料库,进行整体对比,语步结构对比及各语步的词块分析。
Chapter 1 Introduction引言
As the advancement of information technology, internet has been involved into everyaspect of social life, influencing people’s study, work and life unconsciously. In modernsociety, the internet has become a significant medium for the personal informationexchange and displaying platform for individuals and various organizations. Theuniversity takes the responsibly of transmitting knowledge as well as serving the society.Undoubtedly, surfing on the internet has become the most convenient way to acquire theinformation they want and interest in.
1.1 Research Background研究背景
For current students and young people, they prefer to know about the universitythrough the basic introduction, including history, location, faculty, research resources, andfinancial aid and so on. To great extent, they totally rely on the introduction on thehomepage to gain whatever they need. Influenced by the trend of taking advantage ofinternet, large amount of university publicize their homepage on the internet, which bringboth university and students convenience. What’s more, the English introduction is also asignificant medium and essential platform for universities in China and abroad to makeinternational exchange with each other. Just like a display window to present commodityto customers, the English introduction to university is also trying to display the breadthand depth of the school itself. As a sort of publicity text, it has become a vital gateway tothe outside world. It is of great significance for students to choose a school, for westernuniversity or college to choose an exchange program partner, and for the university itselfto leave a good impression in the international world. As a key component on homepage,the quality of the English introduction to university will affect the message conveying andreception as well as the image of the university directly. However, the cultural distinctiondetermined that universities in different countries and regions place different emphasis onthe presentation. Bhatia believes that only very little cross-cultural variation in spokeninteraction has been studied and published in terms of genres though it has become awell-established field for studying discourse (Bhatia, 1993). Therefore, it is meaningful tomake a comparison between English introductions to universities in China and U.S. indiscourse structure, for U.S. is a typical English speaking country. The study is carried outin the hope of helping identify the differences and similarities, but also help Chineseuniversities to improve the composition of the English introduction.To some degree, English introduction is a genre of persuasive text which has beenstudied on three other genres, including sales letters, grant proposals, and job application.Due to the similar persuasive purpose, the university introduction share some features withthe three promotional genres. All of them attempt to “sell” something to reader. In salesletter, some product or service try to be sold, in grant proposal, the ideas and opinions, andin job application, the job-hunter’s capability. In the same way, introduction to universityactually try to persuade the reader to choose the university by conveying useful andappealing information about the school.
