1.2 The significance of the research研究意义
Now that humor is so important for our research into one country's culture, it is usefulfor us to know the main history of the research on this subject.At the beginning most scholars mainly emphasized the importance of philosophy,physiology, aesthetics and sociology these four angles in the research on humor. However, Alinguistic revolution happened which attracted more attention to the pragmatic perspective. In1950s, Cooperative Principle (CP) and Relevance Theory (RT) were introduced to thelinguistics and played more and more important role in this subject. With the new method andinnovative perspective, the research way of linguistics was widely broadened than before.However, the existing method mainly focused on the cognitive perspective. To a certain extent,there are only a few overall researches on this topic.Based on the reasons above, this thesis breaks the one-sidedness of humor research andoffers multi-angles. It chooses the pragmatics as the breakthrough point, and firstly studies onthe mechanism of humor production, then it elaborates the similarities and differencesbetween Chinese and English verbal humor.
