4.1.1 Self-managements for junior school students
(ⅰ) Improve pronunciation
In view of the situation that most of students have great hindrance in recognizing the sound, the author strongly suggests the junior school students paying more attention to the pronunciation learning which is always ignored by the students as well as their teachers. There are many means provided to help the students improve their pronunciation learning.
(a) Focus on a sound
International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) is a helpful tool designed for ESL students to learn how to pronounce an English word. So it is necessary for students to learn and understand its rules of making sounds. Furthermore, the students should have a correct memory of transcription of every word they have learnt. Once meeting with difficulties, it is better for the students to ask help from their teachers.
(b) Read it out
Do not worry about losing face in front of others. It is a good way to build your confidence, and thus give you a big push to perfect your pronunciation.
(c) Imitation
The students can choose one to two authentic tapes to do this kind of practice. Try to imitate the native speaks’ pronunciation, intonation, stress, rhythm. (Notice: the tapes should be recorded completely by British English or American English. Do not listen in mixture.)
(ii) Take it easy
As for the comprehensive barrier, in the point of the author’s view, understanding the nature of listening, being calm and gathering all attention on listening materials are all good ways for students. Actually, this problem quite depends on the teachers rather than students who are responsible to keep students calm and relaxed in the listening lessons.
4.1.2 Self-managements for senior school students
(ⅰ) Pronunciation improvement
It is a pity for us to see that the obstacle in identifying sounds are still one of the biggest problems in listening comprehension of senior school students. We can infer from that pronunciation teaching is a weak point in English teaching in China. A bad, insubstantial foundation of knowledge must affect the learning in the future. Therefore, apart from following the advice above, the students can diversify their listening materials, such as English songs, English TV programs, audio magazines, etc. Meanwhile, those materials will broaden their vision, too.
(ⅱ) Listening skills
It is a proper time for students to study some listening skills that is often neglected by most teachers in schools. For the students, except getting those from their teachers, they can find them a lot in many ways as well. For example, the books for English listening that flood the market today can provide some useful tips at least. Try to select one or two, even more of them and give a try until you seek the best listening skill that suits you.
4.1.3 Self-managements for college students
(ⅰ) Special sound training
It is better for college students to distinguish British English and American English because the college students who have reached a good cognitive level are able to recognize sounds quite well without mixing them up.
