Chapter I Introduction


1.1Significance of vocabulary
Generally speaking, all the words in a language together constitute what isknown as its vocabulary. As Wilkins says: “Without grammar, very little can beconveyed; without vocabulary, nothing can be conveyed.” In his work “Marxism andproblems of Linguistics,” Stalin pointed out that vocabulary is the building material ofa language. Just as a building cannot be constructed without the building materials, nolanguage is conceivable without vocabulary. Vocabulary affects the five skills.Learning vocabulary well can help to develop listening,speaking,reading, writingand translation abilities. Vocabulary is one of three factors of a language, which arepronunciation, vocabulary and grammar. As vocabulary plays such an important rolein a language, it is important to know how vocabulary can be better taught. However,at present, both students and teachers are puzzled about English. For the students, theycan’t enlarge their English vocabulary even though they have spent much timereciting words. For the teachers, they complain that they have no time to teachvocabulary lessons. What they can do is that they just get the students to recite againand again and have a dictation.Senior High School English Curriculum Standards(2003) has raised greaterdemand for vocabulary: the senior students are required to master3,300 一 4,500words in addition to a quantity of useful expressions. Considering that millions ofhigh school students in China are eager to achieve this goal and enlarge theirvocabulary size, it is necessary to make researches on vocabulary learning strategies.So in this essay I carry out the experiments under the guidance of the vocabularylearning strategies .The purpose of the essay is to get the students to understand thevocabulary learning strategies and put it into use so as to improve their abilities torecite words.

1.2Present situation and problem analysis of English vocabularyteaching in high schools
In China, especially in the western parts of China, some English teachers do not realize the importance of vocabulary teaching, which is especially obvious in somehigh schools. Others know how important vocabulary teaching is, but they are at aloss as to how to teach vocabulary efficiently. The following phenomena are commonin China.Phenomenon One: In some high schools in China, vocabulary teaching is oftenignored, instead, grammar teaching is put to the first place. Much attention is put tosentence pattern switch, and grammar explanation and practice. Regarding vocabulary,English teachers have sometimes tended to overlook the importance of the lexicalsystem. This phenomenon might have resulted from the fact that English vocabularyin the text book has equal translations in Chinese, so that the teachers and students donot emphasize over vocabulary. The students can translate the text into Chinese, butthey can not read it fluently. They only have some words and the correspondingChinese meanings in their mind, and they even have few complete sentences in theirmemory. For this reason, the students become dumb when they want to speak English,let alone write a good article.
