Because in contrast to earlier researchers who concentrated primarily on the metaphorical foundation of thought, Lakoff and Johnson (1980) devoted themselves to providing systemic linguistic evidence to support their claim, which is that metaphors of thought, also known as conceptual metaphors, do exist. According to this assertion, “metaphor is not only an issue of language, but that is also, of plain words... human mental processes are primarily metaphorical” (Lakoff & Johnson, 1980: 5).
