2  Process Description

2.1  Preparation before Translation

The full preparation work is the prerequisite for high-quality translation. Before translation, the translator understands the source text comprehensively including the content, the writer, the text type and the language features.

While reading, words including culture-loaded words, characteristic words, names of films and some persons’ names in the field of television and film are underlined; Features of biographical texts are learned so that the translation can meet the features and the reading needs of readers. 

Second, the text type of the source text is identified by the translator according to Peter Newmark, and the conclusion that the source text belongs to comprehensive text, having the characteristics of informative, expressive, and operative texts is drawn. To fulfill the goal of translation on all fronts, the functional equivalence theory is chosen by the translator as the theoretical basis. 

Third, translation tools for the further translation, including translation machine like Youdao and translation dictionaries like Oxford Advanced Learner’s Dictionary are prepared.

The last step of the preparation is to draw up a plan. As a well beginning is half the success, it is essential to draw up a plan for translation practice in order to ensure a high-quality translation. The translation of selected text with more than 10000 words is planned to finish within half a year. The detail of the schedule is presented in the following part. 

2.2  Translation Process

The translation process generally falls into two parts, comprehension and translation. By understanding some new words and expressions and reading the text thoroughly, the translator had a comprehensive grasp of the content and the context, then the translator began translation work including translation revision in conformity with the schedule.

Here is the detail of the translation schedule. From May 10, 2022 to May 31, 2022, the translator did the extensive reading with the aim to roughly understand and grasp the main content of the selected text. From June 1, 2022 to June 20, 2022, the translator finished the translation of the original selected text. The translator chose four chapters and each chapter was translated in five days. In this period, the key and descriptive words, phrases and difficult sentences were marked in the text. From June 21, 2022 to April 30, 2023, the revision of the translation including self-revision and peer-revision was conducted. From May 1, 2023 to May 25, 2023, the translator put the finishing touches to the translation. It is apparent to show it in table.
