The author of this portrait is called Copley who was a very successful painter at that time, because he grazed the brilliant texture of the sitter, and in his painting we can see that the expensive silk. Just from this aspect, it can be said that Copley is a successful artist at his days. From the wearing of the portrait, it can be concluded that Mrs. Scott must come from the British aristocracy, because her wearing is the fashions of the British aristocracy.

This portrait gives us different information at that time. From this portrait, now we can learn that what the rich people wears at that time, and we also can know that the painter Copley is a successful artist at that time. He can portrait so vividly an expensive clothes. Generally speaking, this portrait not only provides the information at that time, but also shows the great work made by famous people.

Just as the text beginning introduced, the second part of the American history is from 1900 to present. In this period, there are a lot of paintings and sculptures. In this section, I mainly introduce two paintings I saw in the Museum. The first one is the Portrait of Will Gee, which is painted by Robert Henri in 1904, and there is a black boy in the portrait. The black boy delivered the paper to the Sherwood studio, and he was a newspaper boy. His mother, a former slave, moved to New York from Virginia. The boy’s hand has a apple. In my opinion, this apple may be nourishment for the little boy. This apple is cheap, and it may represent the democracy.  The second painting called The Sheridan Theatre, which was painted by Edward Hopper in 1937. The theatre is real in the society, and the painting is the reflection of Hopper’s vision of the cinema.  There is a solitary woman who isolated from the crowd in the theatre. Although from the theatre we can not know why the woman isolated from the crowd, we can infer that this is a thought in the painter’s heart. Because in the thirties of the twenties century the economy of America was developed quickly, and at the same time the theatre developed rapidly. As a consequence, it can be concluded that in the crowded people, there is a philosophy need in the people’s heart. As a result, this painting shows the reality of the society.

The American art collection exhibit the Americans from www.51lunwen.org/ArtandDesign/ the colonial to the twenties century, and it shows the development of American life. Visiting the museum is unforgettable experience in my life. Not only I know about the history of America in the painting, but also I enjoy the famous paintings in the museum.
