characteristics of the use of lexical chunks inbusiness English correspondences of EFL learners in order to analyze whether lexicalchunks exert positive influence on business English correspondences and expatiate onthe advantages of keeping the awareness of lexical chunks in the teaching of businessEnglish correspondences. It is anticipated that this thesis can provide empirical basisfor lexical chunk approach in the teaching of business English, especially for theapplication of this approach to the teaching of business English correspondences.

 

1.2 Purposes and Significance of the Study
Owing to the significant role that lexical chunks play in language acquisition, thepractical value of Business English Correspondences, the inadequate empiricalresearch on learners' use of lexical chunks in business English correspondences isessential to study the characteristics of the use of lexical chunks by English foreignlanguage learners.The author hopes that the findings of the study will benefit both English foreignlanguage learners and teachers. For English foreign language learners, if they realizethat their Business English Correspondences proficiency has a close relationship withtheir mastery of lexical chunks while learning, they might be able to pay moreattention to lexical chunks and bring their roles into full play. For English foreignlanguage teachers, especially business English teachers, the author hopes that thisstudy may provide them with the characteristics of the use of lexical chunks inlearners' business English correspondences and then facilitate their teaching inbusiness English correspondences.

 

1.3 Research Questions
This thesis aims to investigate the characteristics of the use of lexical chunks inbusiness English correspondences by English foreign language users and learners.Specifically it is written to address the following questions:1. What are the characteristics and advantages of the use of lexical chunks inEnglish business correspondence?2. What are the differences in the use of the same structural category of lexicalchunks between people in foreign trade company and students learning BusinessEnglish? Are they significant?There are so many types of English business correspondences, but the types arenot definitely settled. On the aspect of classifying the types of businesscorrespondence, it is difficult for researchers to reach an agreement. As a result, theauthor can't choose every type of them to study. In view of that, the author selectsenquiry, making counter offer, shipment, and complaint as the material. That isbecause those four types of English business correspondence are accepted by allpeople and are frequently used in the daily business affairs. Based on Nattinger andDeCarrico's four types of categorization, the use of lexical chunks in English businesscorrespondence is analyzed.

 

1.4 Structure of the Thesis
This thesis is composed of five chapters. Chapter one is the introduction. Chaptertwo offers a literature review of this study, which begins with an introduction oflexical chunks, including the definition, classification and functions, and then comesto the overview of foreign business correspondence. Chapter three introduces theresearch design and detailed research procedure.
