Through the study, it is found that among the four structural categories of lexicalchunks, in correspondences both from foreign trade company and from students, it issentence builders that predominate in English business correspondence, followedclosely by phrasal constraints. Meanwhile, the high frequency shows that there aremore lexical chunks in English business correspondence in real condition than instudents' English business writing. Also, the characteristics of lexical chunks inbusiness correspondence and the advantages of lexical chunk approach to the teachingof business English correspondences are concluded in detail in the previous chapter.
5.1 Pedagogical Implications
Teaching Vocabulary on the Basis of Lexical ChunksTraditional vocabulary teaching focuses on the rote and drill of new words, inwhich the form and function of a word in use are not interwoven and integrated in away which can help learners achieve both accurate and fluent language performance.It is a case that learners with a large vocabulary always have no idea of how to applythem to use. The reason why learners are cornered might be that they have notrealized the importance of lexical chunks as a combination of form and function. Thischaracteristic of lexical chunks can help them put new words into practical use.Therefore, it is extremely necessary for teachers to teach vocabulary on the basis oflexical chunks, instead of single words. Although many teachers have realized theimportance role of collocation in vocabulary teaching, not each of them has shiftedtheir attention on vocabulary teaching from a phrasal level to a sentential level, not tomention those who understand that language is composed of lexical chunks. In orderto equip students with more useful lexical chunks, teachers had better firstly helpthem establish the conscious awareness of lexical chunks by way of providingauthentic materials. It is in the authentic materials that a large number of lexicalchunks exist.
