　　1.2 Objectives and significance of the study研究意义和目标
　　According to the characteristics of lexical chunks and business English contracts, thepresent paper is devoted to study the use of lexical chunks in business English contracts on thebase of Lewis’ (1997) four types of categorizations. Quantitative and qualitative analyses areadopted in this study, to research the following three questions:1. What characteristics of lexical chunks in business English contracts?2. What functions of lexical chunks in business English contracts?3. What relationships between the lexical chunks and business English contracts?Although lexical chunks have gained more and more attention both in China and abroad,previous studies usually research lexical chunks in general English and rarely study in Englishfor special purpose. Because of the important role of lexical chunks in the process of languageacquisition and the practical value of business English contracts, it is important to explore thecharacteristics of lexical chunks in business English contracts.Based on Lewis’ four types of categorization，the use of lexical chunks in businessEnglish contracts will be analyzed. Through the analysis, the author can find the characteristicsof lexical chunks in business English contracts, explore the role which the lexical chunks playin business English contracts, and put forward some suggestions to the teaching and learning ofthe business English contracts writing. The discussions of this study are expected to shed somelight on the teaching and study of business English contracts and the practical business Englishcontracts by the professionals in the field of foreign trade. For teachers, it is hoped that thisstudy can provide them with the knowledge of lexical chunks and thus improve their skill ofbusiness English contracts teaching. For Students, the realization of the importance of lexicalchunks makes them to put more attention to those lexical chunks and bring their roles into fullplay. For businessmen, the knowledge of lexical chunks in business English contracts can alsobenefit and facilitate their practical communication.

　　
　　1.3 Organization of the thesis论文结构
　　The thesis mainly includes five major chapters as follows:Chapter One introduces the research background briefly, the objectives and significances,and the organization of the research.Chapter Two is devoted to literature review related to this research which generallyintroduces the study of lexical chunks at home and aboard.Chapter Three presents three research questions guiding this research, elaborates researchthe methodology, in which data collection and analysis method are accounted in detail.Chapter Four analyzes the collected data, discusses the results of the study in details, byadopting quantitative and qualitative methods, and provides the new findings of the research.Chapter Five briefly summarizes the main findings briefly, states the implications andlimitations of the study, and puts forward suggestions for further studies.
