Chapter 2 Literature Review


2.1 Interpersonal Meaning
In the study history of interpersonal meaning, scholars and researchers from theworld made a lot of definitions of interpersonal meaning from different perspectives indifferent fields, Leech (1966) first explored interpersonal meaning of language used inadvertisement from the angle of systemic function As one of the pioneering researchersin this field, Bakhtin (1981) proposed that meaning is the result of communicationbetween speaker/writer and listener/reader through the material of a special soundcomplex. Although there is no conception of “interpersonal”, the interpersonalmeaning takes a core role in his theory. Based on the view of Burton and Dimbleby(1997), interpersonal meaning has four important sections: exchanging of negotiation,particular social environment, how people understand each other and how peoplewilling to show themselves. Eggins (1997: 48) emphasized that interpersonal meaninghas to do with the meaning of roles and relationship, which is can be seen from socialstatus, intimacy, contact and shares between interact ants. Thompson (2000:28)proposes that to interact with other people, people will adopt language with someinterpersonal meaning to communicate with others so that establish and keeprelationship between the interact ants and influence the attitude or behavior of eachother. Halliday (1978:112) gave the definition of interpersonal meaning that theelements through which the speaker place himself or herself into the context, bothshowing his own views and judge behavior of others.

2.2 Appraisal Theory
Evaluation system is developed on the basis of the study of Chinese level of themiddle school in New South Wels and other place in Australia. The leader of this studyis Martin and there are others scholars such as Coffin (2000), Iodema (1994), Korner(2000), Rose (2003), Rothery (2000) and so on. Appraisal Theory has to do with interpersonal meaning in language, writer andspeaker express their stance, attitude and view to the text in which communicativematerial are present by both of writer and speaker to achieve their own goals. It refersto how writers and speakers agree or disagree, approve or criticize, enthuse and abhorand with how they let their reader or listener in what kind of position. It gets involvedin organization of shared feelings and values.
