Chapter 4 Results and Discussion


In this thesis, it employs the software of Systemic Coder 4.68 to analyze thecorpus which consists of 13560 words. It is inevitable for the author to tag subjectivelyfor the complexity of Appraisal Theory and no clear line among attitude’ssub-categories, in view of this point, the statistic result will be influenced. Thus, tomake sure the objectivity and accuracy of this study, the author will make any effort totag those resources as carefully as possible. After the author’s careful tagging, asecond researcher is invited to code a sample of 30% of the total corpus. Put these tworesults of statistics into SPSS and found that the inter-rator reliability test is conducted.The result of Cronbach alpha is 0.81, which shows that the result of tagging of theattitude resources in this paper is completely reliable.By using Systemic Coder 4.68, the general distribution of Attitude, engagement,graduation in conflictive business English letters is presented in Table 4.1 and thefeature of sub-categories’ distribution of attitude in conflictive business English letteris presented in Table 4.2.

Conclusion


In the study the author mainly studies interpersonal meaning in conflictivebusiness English letters with the respective of attitude resource under Martin’sAppraisal Theory. Interpersonal meaning of conflictive business English letters can berealized by the attitude resource and its sub-categoriesFirstly, the conflictive business English letters are written under the circumstancewhere the problem happened, to show the mood and attitude of the writer to the matter,un/happiness and dis/satisfaction resources take a large proportion in affect resources,dissatisfaction resource is more than the satisfaction which is the same as what wethought, but happiness resource is more than unhappiness which is out of our exception,why is that , because in conflictive business English letters, no matter how bad theexisting matter is, no matter how business parties are not satisfied with each other, theparties of the business transaction will be polite to keep the good relationship betweenthem, that is no wonder why the happiness resource is more than the unhappinessresource.
