Downloading free music or any form of free art from the internet might lead to a violation of patent laws. Someone who downloads it might try to reinvent it for their own personal use. The owners of that resource might sue for violation of patent laws since that resource is an original invention by the owner. “A patent is an exclusive right created by statute and recognized by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (PTO) for a limited period of time. This property applies to inventions, which are new applications of information” (Reed et al, 2005). 
Copyright laws 

Copyright laws protect authors against infringers. Music producers are automatically protected under copyright laws so one downloading music from the internet might be in violation of copyright laws. “Copyright gives a property a certain creative work that keeps others from reproducing it without the owner's permission” (Reed et al, 2005). “Ranging from printed material to photographs to records and motion pictures, these works receive automatic federal protection under the Copyright Act of 1976 from the moment the author creates them” (Reed et al, 2005).
