5.1 The Causes of English Listening Anxiety
Generally speaking, there are many reasons contributing to English listening anxiety,and the following six factors are considered with the special characteristics of juniormiddle school students. It is very important to find solutions to alleviate the existedEnglish listening anxiety after analyzing the sources. The major six sources of foreignlanguage listening anxiety can be illustrated from the following parts; characteristics oflistening activity,anxiety from characteristics of listening materials,anxiety from test,anxiety from negative evaluation,environmental and psychological factors. As a complex process, English listening comprehension does not exist in space, butonly stays in a short time. Listening is not as the same as reading and translating,because listeners cannot go back to see what they do understand. Although it is sofleeting, the listeners need catch the speakers' main idea. So it is easy for them to betense and nervous in the process of listening because of the temporary and fleetingcharacteristics of listening activity. Besides, the feeling of uncomfortable due to thatthey have to response to the information received through ears not by eyes.

Conclusion


Anxiety in English listening is a widespread problem in our educational system.For middle school students,anxiety is also a problem which influences theirperformance. Nowadays, English is a main subject for middle school students. Whenthey are faced with English listening tests, it is natural for them to have pressure.Aimed at finding whether English listening anxiety exists in middle schoolstudents,this thesis made an experiment on Junior middle school students. Itinvestigated the causes of differences in listening anxiety among gender and grade.Based on the results and discussion of the statistical analysis in the previous chapter, thefindings are obtained as follows:
1) In this study,the mean score was 134.6598 which is higher than the theoretical scoreof 102. In general, junior middle school students do experience listening anxiety andmost of the students have a high level of listening anxiety
.2) The study shows that there is no significant difference in listening anxiety betweenmale and female students (F=.306, p=.582>.05). However,the male students tend tosuffers from a little higher level of anxiety than the female students in listeningcomprehension anxiety.
