Four Possible Scenarios of BHP Billiton Company for the Future
1.0 Executive Summary
The main purpose of this report was to use scenario planning method, to devise four possible scenarios for the future. Research for this report included a SWOT analysis of BHP Billiton and developed a four possible scenario for the company Research for this report included a review of current literature on web-based tuition and interviews with employees in BHP Billiton.
In order to make the BHP Billiton create readiness for a range of competitive futures, it is important to use the scenario planning to make strategies for the company to reduce the impossible threats and catch the future opportunities.
While it is clear that the internal and external environment and the development of the company are hard to predict precisely, the quality of the scenario planning of the BHP Billiton might not be so comprehensive, this report recommends that BHP Billiton continues to implement and improve the scenario planning method to focus on the future threats and opportunities as the time goes by.
2.0 Introduction
BHP Company was founded in 1885 and became the oldest and largest company in Australia, mainly engaged in the minerals and international energy mining. Billiton Company was established in 1860 in the Netherlands, mainly engaged in exploitation of mineral resources. In 2001, the two companies merged to form BHP Billiton Group (BHP Billiton, 2012a). BHP Billiton's strategic objective is to create long-term value, through the exploration, mining and processing of natural resources, and providing innovative customer services by markets.

BHP Billiton is a famous multinational company in the world. Through the SWOT analysis of the company and the use of scenario planning approach, it is possible to foresee the company's development within the next five years. As a word, the continued increased operating cost is the most desirable business case; the shortage of experienced staff in some key areas such as China, the continued large-scale mergers and acquisitions, and the need to protect the environment are the other possible scenarios for BHP Billiton in the future.
