ifically thematerials (data) analyzed in the present study are from College Entrance Examination ofBeijing in the year of 2008.Meanwhile, several questions in the context of the picture composition should beunfolded through the procedure of analyzing these materials : (1) How are the threemetafunctions of an image realized? (2) How do the two modes cooperate to constructmeaning in picture composition? (3) How are the specific meaning of an image extendedto an abstract one?

 

1-3 Organization of the Thesis

The thesis includes six chapters. It begins with an introduction of present studies onMDA in modem linguistic context. On observing the lack of studies on multiliteracieswhich is proposed to refer to the reading and writing abilities in multimodal styles, thethesis conducts a research in this aspect in order to provide specific techniques formultiliteracies.Considering the main purpose of this thesis. Chapter Two introduces the trend frommonomodality to multimodality, and then reviews the previous work on MDA both athome and aboard in a systemic functional perspective. In the upcoming part, relationsbetween images and verbiage as well as the definition of multiliteracies are discussed.Chapter Three lays the theoretical framework to this research. It firstly reviews thesemiotic theory from both Peirce's and Saussure's point of view which is the starting pointof Halliday's systemic functional grammar. Then Systemic Functional Linguistics isintroduced from three metafuctions, ideational, interpersonal and textual. Finally, visualgrammar proposed by Kress and van Leeuwen is adopted to analyze images inrepresentational, interactive and compositional https://www.51lunwen.org/education/ meaning which is relative to Halliday'sthree metafunctions.Chapter Four is the main part of this thesis in which case studies are included. In thischapter, two different kinds of picture compositions are analyzed respectively, and bothare in the order of analysis of images in Kress and van Leeuwen's Visual grammar ,analysis of verbal text in Halliday's Systemic Functional Linguistics and the intersemioticrelations between the two modes to study different types of relations between images andverbal text in order to find ways to cultivate one's multiliteracies.Following the analysis results of chapter Four that different types of relations existbetween images and verbal texts, chapter Five comes up with the strategies for cultivatingor improving one's multiliteracies from the learners' perspective and the teachers'perspective as well.The last chapter serves as a summary of what have been done in this thesis. Not onlythe questions raised in chapter One are answered, but also the limitation of the study andsuggestions for future study are discussed.
