摘要: The poetic "ask not" quotation is the most memorable lines among the speech. President John F Kennedy would have been delighted to know that his inaugural address is still remembered and admired 50 years later.

ying renewal as well as change."
"Together let us explore the stars, conquer the deserts, eradicate disease, tap the ocean depth and encourage the arts and commerce.""…
ask not what American will do for you, but what together we can do for the freedom of man."
Paragraphs 15, 16, 17, 18 begin with the same type of phrases:“Let both sides…”
Thanks to its parallel and balanced structure, neat rhyme, parallelism does make the inaugural address stressful, forceful, thus makes it a successful appeal to the emotions of the audience.
As for alliteration we have:
"Let us go forth to lead the land we love"
"Let the word go forth from this time and place, to friend and foe alike…
" Instead of using "friend and enemy", he used "friend and foe.""Let every nation know, whether it wishes us well or ill that we shall pay any price, bear any burden, meet any hardship, support any friend, oppose any foe to assure the survival and the success of liberty. ""…ask of us here the same high standards of strength and sacrifice which we ask of you."
These alliterations not only add musical beauty to the address, capture the audience attention, but through repetition of like initial sound, these lines produced a sonorous and pleasant melody. They are rhythmic and forceful.

2.3 Biblical language style
Another point that one notices is his use of biblical language style in some places. Perhaps he thinks this kind of style adds solemnity and appeal. That may have something to do with his being a Catholic. Here are some examples that illustrate this point:
"Let the word go forth from this time and place…""…to strengthen its shield of the new, and to enlarge the area in which its writ may run."
In this sentence "Let both sides unite to heed, in all corners of the earth, the command of Isaiah—to undo the heavy burdens, and to let the oppressed go free, ", "to undo the heavy burdens, and to let the oppressed go free" is directly quoted from the Bible.

2.4 Bold imagery
The speech also bristled with imagery, starting with a stark warning about the way the world has changed because "man holds in his mortal hands the power to abolish all forms of human poverty and all forms of human life."
"The torch has been passed to a new generation of Americans." People of the developing world were "struggling to break the bonds of mass misery."
JFK vowed to "assist free men and free governments incasting off the chains of poverty" and that this hemisphere intends to re main the master of its own house."
He sought to "begin anew the quest for peace before the dark powers of destruction unleashed by science engulf all humanity", hoped that "a beachhead of cooperation may push back the jungle of suspicion" and issued a "call to bear the burden of a long twilight struggle."

2.5 Audience analysis
Impressive though the rhetoric and imagery may have been, what really made the speech memorable was that it was the first in augural address by a US president to follow the first rule of speech-preparation: analyze your audience - or, to be more precise at a time when mass access to television was in its infancy, analyze your audiences.
The object of a political speech is to explain, convince and persuade the people that what he is saying and planning to do the best represents their interests so they should support him. As president of the United States, Kennedy has to address a world wide audience. He has to appeal not only to th论文英语论文网提供整理,提供论文代写英语论文代写代写论文代写英语论文代写留学生论文代写英文论文留学生论文代写相关核心关键词搜索。
