tudy. The thesis studies the variations in the English Version of Wo De Di Wang She}g Ya translated by Howard Goldblatt, based on postcolonial translation theory along with the modern cultural translation theory. Variations in this thesis refer to the omissions, deviations, cultural default and cultural filter. And the variations discussed in the thesis include the variations of the image of the Emperor, the variations of words and the variations of narrative discourse. Due to different understandings of the image of Emperor in the translator's own culture, the ideology of Western Dominance and affected by the potential readers, the translator rewrites parts of the original text, thus causing the variations. The variation is the embodiment of the marginalization of oriental literature, the asymmetrical power relations between the West and East and the manipulation of translator's ideology and dominant poetics in the target culture. It is the assumption that enables the author to continue his research

This thesis has analyzed the variations and their reasons occurring in the English version of Wo De Di Wang She}g Ya, in order to prove that variations in translation are inevitable and they should be given more attention. Besides, two cultures are closely connected in the process of translation, so the study of the source and target text is also the study of the two distinct cultures. What's more, the international reputation of modern and contemporary fiction written in Chinese anywhere in the world is chiefly dependent upon English translation of that fiction, so there are always some obstacles between the two languages, so it is necessary to study the translated versions.
