摘要:his thesis has analyzed the variations and their reasons occurring in the English version of Wo De Di Wang She}g Ya, in order to prove that variations in translation are inevitable and they should be given more attention.
Chapter One Introduction
1.1 Research Background
Su Tong is one of the most famous writers of the avant-garde in modern Chinese literature. His novels, such as Qi Qie Cheug Quu and Mi, were adapted as films and became very popular, because of which, Su Tong gets well-known in China. His novels always hold the characters of imaginative and circumlocutory plots, profound implication, as well as beautiful and sensitive words. He is good at showing characters' inner world and depicting the real human nature. And as one of his "New Historical Novel", Wo De Di Waug Sheug Ya fully reflects his unique personality and style. Its English translation was done by Howard Goldblatt, a translator who has a good command of Chinese language and has translated a number of works of such famous writers in China as Xiao Hong(萧}I=), Mo Yan(莫言),Su Tong(苏童),Wang Shuo(土朔), Jia Pingwa(贾平凹),ect. However, little attention and study have been given to the English version of Wo De Di Waug Sheug Ya, translated by the famous American sinologist Professor Howard Goldblatt, after its publication in 2005. Post-colonial theory, flourishing in the late 1980s, as a type of theoretic critical discourse of culture, studies the power relationship of all cultures, societies, nations, with other cultures, investigating how the culture of conqueror arbitrarily distorts the culture of the conquered; how the latter responds, adapts, resists or overcome the high-pressure of domination of colonial cultures. Since its occurrence, there seldom appear studies on the English version of Wo De Di Waug Sheug Ya on the basis of postcolonial translation theory. Therefore, the author chooses its English version to study from the perspective of post-colonial theory.
1.2 Purpose and Significance of the Research
Because of the different cultural backgrounds, the translator must make some variations in the process of the translation in the context of post-colonialism. As a more detailed research based on close reading in the framework of postcolonial translation theory, the purposes of the
thesis are to observe the rule of translation activity from another aspect through the study of variations and to study the reasons of the variations
The first significance of this thesis lies in the research object--- Wo De Di Wang Sheg Ya. There appear many textual analyses on the basis of postcolonial translation theory. However, none of them chooses Wo De Di Wang Sheg Ya as a case to study the variations in its English version. So in this thesis, the author takes Wo De Di Wang Sheg Ya as a case to analyze the variations in its English version. And it is of great significance to the promotion of the study of the English version of Su Tong's Wo De Di Wang She}g Ya. Secondly, the thesis is a more detailed research based on close reading text in the framework of this theory. It helps to promote the studies of the ostcolonial translation, and will stimulate us to take the phenomenon of variations as a fact and study it from the cultural perspective.
1.3 Assumptions
The interdiscipline of translation studies has already become a hot topic which is discussed by the cultural circle, the cultural theorists. Post-colonialism, because of paying attention to culture politics, has been taken as the important theory tool and applied in the practice of translation s
