Chapter 1 Introduction
l.lThe research background
During the past few decades,the students' overall English proficiency has beengreatly improved in college English, especially in the reading part, which shows that thelearning and teaching for non-English majors has made great progress in Chinesevocational school. That is to say, reading competence of Chinese students has reached toa relatively high level. But the student's writing skill still lags behind, which makesEnglish teachers confused and worried.Writing, regarded as a basic vocational course, is the most difficult part to deal within English teaching. According to the guiding documents, ”The Basic TeachingRequirements of The Vocational Education", issued by Ministry of Education in 2000,clearly states that the English teaching should highlight the usefulness and aims of theteaching content. Furthermore, the purpose of the writing part is to enable students tomake a simple written English communication over business activities in the future.Such as, how to conduct correctly with written essay, letters, fill in the forms in English.
Through six years’ engagement of vocational teaching at non-English majors,theauthor discovered that: students’ works is filled with dry language, empty thought,nothing worth mentioning. Some students usually do not pay attention to observe life,not mention of the accumulation of material, so their writing often have nothing to say,without a certain input leading to no output, no way to improve writing skills.Meanwhile, the language transfer is more prevalent in writing, especially in themigration of vocabulary, grammatical structures, chapter and cultural aspects.Writing is a comprehensive mastery of language points,which can flilly reflect thestudent's language ability. The English writing errors have bothered the languageteachers for a long time. As we all known, the language transfer in second languageacquisition has been a controversial topic in the past few decades.So what kinds of mistakes do the Chinese students usually make? Is there any law of the errors? English and Chinese belong to two different language systems, such asmorphology, syntax, and paragraph, what kinds of errors belong to the negativelanguage transfer? And what is the form? All the above are the problems and issuesconcerned and discussed in this thesis.
1.2 Significance and purpose of the research
Nowadays, many researchers find that the influence of the native language inChinese students' English learning is becoming increasingly powerful, and it is believedthat the main influence will be negative. Language transfer is a common and inevitablephenomenon occurred in the field of second language acquisition. Language transferconsists of positive transfer and negative transfer, the former one promotes languagelearning while the latter one prevents language learning and can easily lead to errors. Inthe past few years, scholars and linguists have done many studies on native languagetransfer at college English teaching from different points of views.
