1. Introduction


This Study attempts to examine the phenomenon of negative transfer in Chineselearners' English writing with a combination of quantitative and qualitative methods. 1.1 Background of the study

Nowadays, English has become the main foreign language in education system.Though many students in China have learnt English for many years, they still havedifficulty in mastering it. Among the four basic skills relating to English performance (i.e.listening,speaking, reading and writing), writing is the hardest. As a result, many errorsarise in learners' English writing and the errors attributed to Chinese negative transferconstitute a great percentage. How to reduce those errors is a problem to both teachersand learners.In the field of foreign language research, the researchers of second languageacquisition have shown strong interest in studying the phenomenon of positive andnegative transfer in order to serve their pedagogical purpose. In the 1950s,languagetransfer was deemed the most important factors in second language acquisition. In the1960s,its importance waned as learners' errors were not seen as the result of languagetransfer but of the creative construction process. But in 1980s, the role of transfer wasacknowledged and a more balanced view maintains transfer interacts with a host of otherfactors. In retrospect, we can find the understanding of language transfer has becomemore comprehensive and deeper.
This study was undertaken to find out the negative transfer in Chinese learners'English writing. The research questions to be addressed in the study are the following:
1) What's the percentage of the transfer errors in Chinese learners' English writing?
2) What kinds of negative transfer errors are manifested in Chinese learners,Englishwriting?
3) How to avoid negative transfer of mother tongue?
4) What implications can we get from the research of negative transfer?
It should be noted that in the study the author doesn't distinguish second languagefrom foreign language when they refer to English. Moreover, English can also be calledL2 or target language. Besides, mother tongue, native language and LI can be usedinterchangeably. The errors due to negative transfer of mother tongue are also termed astransfer errors. What's more,all the erroneous parts have been italicized and the correctones have been given in the brackets following the sentences.


1.2 Significance of the study
The theoretical significance of the study is undoubted. Long and Richards wrote inthe preface of Language Transfer (Odlin:1989): "Language transfer has been a centralissue in applied linguistics, second language acquisition, and language teaching for atleast a century."
