摘要:Instructional technology has changed the way of learning and the network-basedlearning has provided a wide choice of limitless resources. However, frequently,students are required to leam and apply skills independently and self-directly.Students should be capable of facilitating their own learning, and it seems thatnetwork-based learning creates a need for their self-regulated learning.

Chapter 1 Introduction


21 century is the information era. The proprietary and authoritative knowledge is no longer owned by educators. With the combination of Network socialization and social networking, a variety of learning forms are brought about. Along with a wide spectrum of information channels, such as blogs,wikis,and etc, a new type of independent, self-controlled, active learners are coming into being.

1.1 Background of the Study
Network-based English learning means English learning activities by using network, which mainly is in the form of the self-learning or negotiation learning. Compared with the study in traditional classroom,network-based English learning is showing its highly competitive features, afford ability, and accessibility. It is gaining an increasing popularity with three obvious characteristics: first,of rich networkEnglish learning resources; second, in the form of self-learning and cooperative learning; third, without the restriction of time and space. It implies that the network-based English learning requires learners with high self-consciousness, strongself-guiding and self-learning ability.

1.1研究背景
基于网络的英语学习是指通过使用网络,这主要是自学或协商的形式学习英语学习活动。与传统的课堂学习相比,基于网络的英语学习是极具竞争力的功能,负担得起的能力,以及可访问性。它是获得越来越普及,有三个明显的特点:第一,丰富的网络英语学习资源;第二,自我学习和合作学习的形式;第三,没有时间和空间的限制。这意味着,基于网络的英语学习要求学习者具有高自我意识,强烈的自我指导和自我学习能力。

 

However, besides the various advantages, thenetwork-based learning has also brought about several challenges to students. It isnecessary to become a self-regulated learner with the help of instructional technology.In the network-based learning, the learner often cannot be rectified in time as intraditional classroom when their behaviors deviate from the current learning tasks.What's worse, learners wouldn't or cannot consciously go back to the plannedlearning track because of getting astray in the network information. So the specificityindicates the importance of SR in the network-based English learning. Only whenlearners conduct conscious regulation and control during the learning process andreasonably control learning time and space, then the learning goals can be effectivelyachieved. This view has been identified by most learners. For example, Huang Ping (2004) indicates that nearly half of the learners identify that SR mechanism is themain factor in influencing the quality of the network-based learning. Therefore,improving SRC is of great importance.


Some studies have revealed that the SR plays the crucial role in improvinglanguage learning, for example, Vandergrift (1992) shows that language learners withhigh level can much more effectively use SR strategy compared with the ones withlow level; Anderson and Vandergrift (1996),study on improving the learners'meta-cognitive competence confirms that there is a significant relation between theSR strategies and learners* listening level(Quoted from Cohen, 2000). O'Malley andChamot (1990), Casanave (1998) and Vandergrift (1999) all confirm that SR asmeta-cognitive strategy plays a positive role in improving hearing through theempirical study. Some domestic scholars also agree with the above point of view, forexample. Wen (1995) shows that there is a difference in SR strategies between goodEnglish listeners and poor English listeners.
