ent study is corpus-based, andqualitative and quantitative in analysis, i.e., data are collected by computer and analyzedmanually, which is superior to the previous researches conducted by experimentalmethod. This automatic method can somehow avoid some limitations of traditionalmethods.
Contrastive analysis and error analysis are applied to analyze the possible causesfor redundancy errors. The analysis shows the transfers from mother tongue and targetlanguage are the biggest interference. Meanwhile, the statistics trace the relationshipbetween the occurrence of redundancy errors and L2 learners" English proficiency,which is of great help both for the teachers and the learners to make improvementaccordingly. What's more, redundancy errors, in some sense, offer the evidences of howlanguage is acquired, which implies the acquisition stage of the learners. To some extent,redundancy error can help learners to discover the rules of target language.

Chapter 2 Literature Review

The present study is corpus-based, and trying to trace the possible causes ofredundancy errors in virtue of CA and EA. Therefore, in this chapter, the author willmake a brief review about the theoretical studies from redundancy that begins withShannon's information theory research to the up-to-date corpus research. It includesRedundancy, Contrastive Analysis, Interlanguage, Error Analysis and CorpusLinguistics. This part will provide some theoretical support for further processing.

2.1 Redundancy
Redundancy, as a concept of Information Theory, is put forward by Americanscholar C.E. Shannon in 1948. It refers to the more information transmitted thanactually needed. Shannon engages in a study of information processing with amethodology of mathematics. In his study, he find that a noise channel can notreconstruct the original messages or the transmitted signals. Thus, the introduction ofredundancy aims to combat the noise involved in the channel. Redundancy is necessaryto ensure the original messages or the transmitted signals to be reconstructed, which areembodies in correcting errors and amplifying information. What's more, the key point isthe degree of redundancy, i.e. how to achieve optimal communication of informationwith a minimal degree of redundancy. That is exactly what the information theoryconcerns about.
