Chapter One Introduction
This chapter is an introduction to the research, which includes the research background,research objectives and questions, research significance, as well as organization of the
thesis.This thesis aims at finding out the distribution of Appraisal resources in Chinese and Britishliterary fairy tales and revealing the interpersonal meaning of the Appraisal resources bycontrasting the two groups from the Attitude system, Engagement system and Graduationsystem. A lot of researches have been done to the study of literary fairy tales as well as theAppraisal System, but few of them combine the Appraisal System with literary fairy tales. It ishoped that the results about Chinese and British literary fairy tales will be more objective byanalyzing from the perspective of the Appraisal System, so that the results will be a littlehelpful for the writers in the creation of literary fairy tales. So it is important to know moreabout the Appraisal System and literary fairy tales by referring to related materials as many asthe author could before analyzing the Appraisal resources.
1.1 Research Background
Halliday takes language as a semiotic system, and he points out that language has threefunctions, which are ideational function, interpersonal function and texture function, amongwhich interpersonal function is taken as an act (Halliday, 2008), namely people use language toexpress their attitudes or affects to influence others (Thompson, 2000). Before the proposal ofthe Appraisal System, mood and modality are the focus of Systemic-Functional linguistics instudying the interpersonal function of language, which can not reveal the speaker’s or writer’sevaluation attitude. Martin and White makes a deeper study on Interpersonal function, and putforward the Appraisal System, whose study resources are the lexis of materials rather than theclauses. And the Appraisal System has three sub-systems, which are separately Attitude System,Engagement System and Graduation System. Martin thought that the Appraisal System is aboutvarious attitudes, the strength grade of the emotion, the source of values and the ways to havethe readers agree with the author, which are revealed by language approaches in evaluativetexts (Martin & Rose, 2003). They only focused on texts of narrative style firstly, later theybegan to pay attention to appraisals in literary review, the objectivity of texts of media, scienceand technology and
history, as well as the source of responsibility of values (Wang Zhenhua,2001).

1.2 Research Questions and Objectives
Under the guidance of the Appraisal System, this thesis will go on with two questions,which are also the objectives of the thesis.1. How are Appraisal Resources distributed in Chinese and British literary fairy tales?2. What values are revealed from Appraisal Resources? What similarities and differencesare revealed in the distributions of appraisal resources in Chinese and British literary fairytales?

It is widely considered that the Appraisal System is a very effective method to studyvarious texts, because it has been applied to many researches by a lot of scholars and a largenumber of findings as well as new perspectives have been concluded by scholars due to theapplication of the Appraisal System.
