摘要:Last but not least, this paper aims to study the language attrition of English majorgraduates after their two year’ teaching in middle school. It is of great practical significance tostudy this subject for cultivating teachers’ sustainable development and improving theirteaching quality.
2. Literature Review
2.1 Language attrition
This chapter provides the relative literature review of language attrition. The definitionand classification of language attrition are discussed and previous researches of languageattrition abroad and at home are reviewed. Some important theoretical hypotheses regardingthe processes of second language attrition and variables affecting language attrition areprovided.
2.1.1 Definition of language attrition
In major approaches to the study of the phenomenon of language loss, a great numberof terms are used such as shift, loss, death, change, forgetting, reversion, and attrition. all ofthem refer to the gradual waning or disappearance of a certain language in individuals orgroups with different focuses. Of these terms, attrition seems to be preferred and used widelyin most researches in the field of language attrition. It was first acknowledged at theconference on the Attrition of Language Skills at the University of Pennsylvania in 1980.Oxford says that ‘‘language loss refers to loss or attrition of skill in one’s native language (L1)or a second or foreign language (L2)” (1982). From a neurolinguistic point of view, attritioncan be seen part of an integrative approach to language use “across the lifespan”(Hylstenstam&Obler, 1989). The term “attrition” is also used to refer to individual languageloss and consequently takes place within one generation (de Bot, 2001). Kopke definesattrition as “the non-pathological loss of a language in, usually, bilingual subjects” (2004).
