ed and previous researches of language attrition abroad and athome are reviewed. Some important theoretical hypotheses regarding the processes of secondlanguage attrition and variables affecting language attrition are provided. Chapter Three givesan explanation of the research procedures of the study. In this chapter, the participants, theinstruments and the research method used in the study are described. The ways that data arecollected and analyzed are explained. Chapter Four reports the data obtained in the study andthe results are discussed. Chapter Five is a conclusion of the paper, in which major findingsare concluded and the implications of the study from theoretical and practical viewpoint arepresented. With the illustration of the limitations in this study，suggestions for future researchare put forward.

2. Literature Review

2.1 Language attrition
This chapter provides the relative literature review of language attrition. The definitionand classification of language attrition are discussed and previous researches of languageattrition abroad and at home are reviewed. Some important theoretical hypotheses regardingthe processes of second language attrition and variables affecting language attrition areprovided.

2.1.1 Definition of language attrition
In major approaches to the study of the phenomenon of language loss, a great numberof terms are used such as shift, loss, death, change, forgetting, reversion, and attrition. all ofthem refer to the gradual waning or disappearance of a certain language in individuals orgroups with different focuses. Of these terms, attrition seems to be preferred and used widelyin most researches in the field of language attrition. It was first acknowledged at theconference on the Attrition of Language Skills at the University of Pennsylvania in 1980.Oxford says that ‘‘language loss refers to loss or attrition of skill in one’s native language (L1)or a second or foreign language (L2)” (1982). From a neurolinguistic point of view, attritioncan be seen part of an integrative approach to language use “across the lifespan”(Hylstenstam&Obler, 1989). The term “attrition” is also used to refer to individual languageloss and consequently takes place within one generation (de Bot, 2001). Kopke definesattrition as “the non-pathological loss of a language in, usually, bilingual subjects” (2004).
