Conclusion


The research results indicate that attrition actually exists among English majorgraduates after they end their formal English training, even after graduation they work with arelative job in middle schools. It is advised that as English learners as well as English teachers,they should try hard to reduce the amount of attrition and maintain the language skills asmuch as possible. Based on the analysis and discussion of the EFL attrition among Englishmajor graduates, some implications have been drawn to tackle the problem. The implicationscan be explained in terms of both theoretical and practical values.From theoretical value, this study has confirmed the “Inverse Hypothesis”, whichmeans that the higher the degree of attainment, the lower the degree of attrition. The currentresearch gives access to evidence in support of the “Inverse Hypothesis”. This study has alsoaffirmed the existence of “Critical Threshold”, which is proposed by Neisser (1984). Oncelearners’ proficiency level reaches this “threshold”, language attrition will not occur easily.The study will provide empirical evidence to verify further the “Critical Threshold”, althoughits threshold value and acceptable range still need further investigation.
The practical value drawn from the findings of the present study is discussed in termsof three areas. Firstly, EFL learners can benefit from the findings of the research. To preventsecond language attrition, learners should maintain constant review toward the secondlanguage, especially those language skills that are prone to attrition. Besides, as initialproficiency is the most important factor affecting language attrition, the learners should tryhard to reach the “Critical Threshold”. In terms of the theory of “Critical Threshold”, iflearners can bring their initial language level to a certain demarcation line, after formalEnglish language training, they can maintain their English knowledge as much as possible. InChina, learners and government have spent a considerable amount of time and money inlearning English, so in terms of economic education, the study has made a positivecontribution to the English language education.Secondly, an important objective of second language attrition research may lie incurriculum planning for second language teaching.
