Chapter Two Literature Review

2.1 Previous studies on metaphor
This section is divided into two parts, the first part it presents the historical studies onmetaphor in the west. And the second it introduce the previous studies on metaphor inChina. The study of metaphor can date back to Plato and Aristotle times, about two thousandyears ago. And Aristotle was the first one who studied metaphor academically. Besides him,many scholars have contributed to the study of metaphor from different aspects. As to itsdevelopment, there are three theories of metaphor-- comparison theory, substitution theory,and interaction theory, and these three theories are the most influential ones. Scholars ofdifferent groups overseas and at home studied metaphors from different perspectives.According to Black (1993:120), the study of metaphor can be divided into two types, thetraditional view and the contemporary view. The traditional view considers metaphor asmerely the matter of language, and the contemporary view considers metaphor as a matterof thought or reason.

2.2 Previous studies on Cohesion
The study of cohesion can be traced back to 1960s, Jacobson have done a research onthe parallel phenomena which is formed by syntactic structures and repetitions in literaryoutputs (Traugott & Pratt 1980:21). But Halliday (1964) is the first one who introduced the term of cohesion in the realm of linguistic. The publishment of the book Cohesion inEnglish written by Halliday and Hasan announces the establishment of cohesive theory.From that time on, a many scholars started to do researches on cohesion and a variousexplanations of the concept of cohesion have been provided.Cohesion in English written by Halliday and Hasan was first published in 1976. It is astandard text book that studies the cohesion that arises from semantic relation betweensentences. In addition, it tells us the way of analyzing and coding sentences, which isapplicable to specimen texts. But this theory is no perfect at all. The constant improvementand suspicion on the book has never stop since the day of its publication. Scholars doubtedfor several years later because cohesion can not guarantee the coherence, and study ondiscourse cohesion is not significant. (Brown & Yule, 1983; Widdowson, 1978). But thisbook has been published for many times till now and the influence of it is still expanding.
