摘要:The first purpose of this thesis is to prove that hedges abound in Englishbroadcasting news. News is defined as the information concerning recent events orhappenings which are especially reported by newspaper, radio, periodicals, ortelevision .
Chapter Two Literature review
2.1 Definition and development of hedges
G. Lakoff firstly put forward the concept of hedges in A Study in MeaningCriteria and the Logic of Fuzzy Concepts (1972) which is drawn from Zadeh’s (1972)“fuzzy set theory.” Lakoff made a distinction between the notion of hedges and“fuzziness” or “vagueness.” He pointed out the boundaries of language are not clearand so there are a lot of ways to convey the degree of category. In this case, hedges canbe considered as the ways by which the range of undulation of category can be showed.Lakoff regarded hedges as “an approach to modify semantic fuzziness of a sentenceand a way to distinguish peripheral member of the conceptual categories of languagefrom the core ones.” Hedge was defined by him as follows: “For me, some of the mostinteresting questions are raised by the study of words whose meaning implicitlyinvolves fuzziness-words and whose job is to make things fuzzier or less fuzzy. I willrefer such words to hedges” (1973:471). This sort of words can demonstrate thespeakers’ subjective conjecture on the utterance contents or propose the objectivefoundation to make the indirect assessment of the utterance or provide themodification of the truth value of the utterance (He, 176). In his book, a list oflinguistic items which can be considered as hedges, such as more or less, sort of,roughly, somewhat, relatively, mostly, basically, strictly speaking, particularly, almost,as it were, especially, in a sense, commonly, nearly, and so on. However, his researchabout hedges is mainly regarded as the field of semantics. Due to this limitation, manyother scholars have proposed their different views of hedges.

2.2 Classifications of hedges
As the differences of the understanding of the notion of hedges, the linguists haveproposed their viewpoints of how to categorize hedges through their research onhedges. Up to now, there are three main versions of the classifications of hedges whichwere put forward by three groups of scholars from the perspective of grammar, semantics and pragmatics. Among these three classifications, the last taxonomy isacknowledged as the most influential one owing to the booming development ofpragmatics. Since more attention has been focused on language application to various contextnot only for the scholars abroad and at home and this research on the application ofhedges in diplomatic language is conducted from the perspective of pragmatics, several disparate pragmatic classifications of hedges by some important linguists arenecessary to introduce in the next part, mainly including Prince et al’s classification,Salager Meyer’s and Hyland’s category of hedges.
