Chapter One Introduction
1.1 Research Background
Mo Yan is a productive writer and has written various novellas and short stories and numerous novels such as Red Sorghum, Big Breasts and Wide Hips, The Republic of Wine, The Garlic Ballads, Life and Death are Wearing Me Out, Frog and so on. Many of his works are translated into over 40 languages like Italian, Sweden, Norwegian, French, Japanese and English. It is exactly the translations that make people over the world familiar with Mo Yan, thus helping him gain international recognition. The research object is Mo Yan’s Frog. It is one of Mo Yan’s excellent representative works and was published by the Shanghai Literature and Art Publishing House in December 2009. In 2011, this book earned Mo Yan Mao Dun Literature Prize. Mo Yan took great effort to write it. It is said that he used more than ten years to contemplate this novel before starting and changed three drafts when writing and spent four years to complete it. Compared with his other important works like Big Breasts and Wide Hips and Life and Death are Wearing Me Out, the writing of this book on the whole reaches a very high artistic level in aspects of fiction structure, narrative language, aesthetic appeal, image-shaping and epic reflection of social change. Frog is composed of five letters which include four stories and a nine-act play. Those letters are written by the narrator Tadpole and addressed to Sugitani Akihito. It mainly talks about the fifty-year life experience of Tadpole’s aunt Gugu as an obstetrician in her hometown Gaomi in rural China, through which the writer describes the country’s arduous and complex historical process of implementing the family planning policy for the population control. The whole book successfully creates a vivid and moving rural gynecologist image. Owing to its high artistic and ideological values, it is worthy of a thorough study.
