Chapter Five Pragmatic analysis of hedges in English broadcasting news

5.1 The reasons for the existence of hedges in English broad casting news
As it is known, language which is used by people can not exist by itself. Thatmeans when we use language, we should make choices. We should choose whichlanguage should be used. It is to say language use is a process of making choices.Whenever we use language, we make continuous linguistic choices consciously orunconsciously. According to Verschueren (1999:55-58), using language must consist ofthe continuous linguistic choices making, consciously or unconsciously, for language-internal (i.e. structural) and/ or language- external reasons. So the existence of hedgesin English broadcasting news also illustrate that it is the choice which made by thenews reporters. But why do the reporters use hedges in English broadcasting news isan important question which need to be solved.Verschueren (2000) holds that language use is a dynamic process of adaptationbetween linguistic structure and context. Contextual correlates of adaptabilitypotentially include all the ingredients of the communicative context with whichlinguistic choice have to be inter-adaptable. According to Verschueren’s AdaptationTheory, the author argues that in English broadcasting news, the reporters use hedgesin order to cater to different contextual variables, so that the news will be more truthful.The final purpose of English broadcasting news is to make the listeners know the latestnews objectively. Because there is no direct communication between the reporters andthe listeners, we still consider that hedges are applied to adapt to listeners’communicative requirements. In a word, the author holds that the reasons for theexistence of hedges in English broadcasting news are just the adaptability of language.

Conclusion

The present study is a qualitative and quantitative study of hedges in Englishbroadcasting news based on Verschueren’s Adaptation Theory. The study mainly dealswith three main aspects, the frequency and distribution of hedges; the reasons of theexistence of hedges and the pragmatic functions of hedges in English broadcastingnews. The main findings are as follows: through the analysis of the frequency and distribution of hedges in thecorpus of English broadcasting news in Chapter four, we can see that hedges do existin English broadcasting news.
