摘要:From the theoretical perspective, since the eighties in the 20lli century, textbookevaluation has been received increasing attention and popularity. Accordingly, a numberof experts have done relatively research towards it .

answer to this question is rather essential because itconcerns tiie theme to be analyzed.Ur (2000: 183) employs the term "coursebook", which actually means a textbookthat both the teacher and students have. It is considered as the basis for a language courseand thus it is in principle to be followed systematically.Tomlinson (2003: 2) uses the term “material”,which includes anything that is usedto facilitate the learning of a language. This means that anything used purposefully toenrich the learners' language knowledge and experience can be regarded as material. Inthis way, many forms of textbooks are presented, for example textbooks, cassettes,videos, CD-ROMs,dictionaries,grammar books, readers, workbooks or photocopiedexercises.The following provides some definitions of textbook so as to better understand thisquestion.In the Oxford Illustrated Dictionary,textbook is defined as "manud of illustration inany branch of science or study, work recognized as an authority (1962: 879)." While inthe Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English, textbook is defined as "a book thatcontains information about a subject that people study, especially at school or college(2005: 1714),,. Obviously, the scope of textbook in tibe latter definition is more specificand concrete than the former.

2.2 The role of textbook
Textbook carries a lot weight in vocational college. It is of great importance in manyaspects. As an essential component in implementing a syllabus,a textbook serves assources of new theories. Richards (1993) proposes that for many teachers, textbook is theprimary source of teaching ideas and materials in their teaching. A textbook always givesclues to teachers when they are going through teaching process. As Hutchinson and Torres (1994) suggest, "The textbook is an almost universalelement of English language teaching- Millions of copies are sold every year, andnumerous aid projects have been set up to produce them in various countries...Noteaching-learning situation, it seems, is complete until it has its relevant textbook",Sheldon (1988) suggests that textbooks represent the visible heart of any ELTprogram and offers considerable advantages for both the students and the teacher. Healso points out that students often harbor expectations about using a textbook in theirparticular language classroom and program and they believe that published materialshave more credibility than teacher-generated or "in-house" materials. Haycroft (1998)suggests that they are psychologically essential for students since their progress andachievement can be measured concretely when using them.
